armed conflicts in the Middle East initially I was trained to fight the European theater to protect the U.S and its Western allies from the Soviet Union during the heart of a cold war as a Green Beret I had to learn an Eastern Bloc language and be prepared to infiltrate Behind Enemy Lines to link up with train and fight alongside partisans to defeat the Red Army in their very own backyard in other words I had to be really good at guerrilla warfare although the cold war is technically over we now face a new global conflict terrorism to combat this threat Ive got to be an expert in the techniques of Close Quarter battle together well explore how elite soldiers and police units use these specific techniques weapons and Technologies to defeat their enemies at very close range the term Close Quarter battle is used to describe scenarios that police and military face in both urban and rural environments although the origin of Close Quarter battle goes back to sword fighting and hand-to-hand combat todays used primarily to describe the techniques when small teams are confronting an enemy inside a building or than a compound stairwells hallways and rooms always pose dangerous and unknown variables from basic muzzle awareness weapons transitions to silent team communication all police and military units need to be as good as they can possibly be at Close Quarter battle in todays episode Ill introduce you to the three basic elements of CQB surprise speed and violence of action and show you how theyre applied in Close Quarter battle situations Ill give you a basic overview of the U.S Special Forces and how their use of CQB techniques in Iraq and Afghanistan have helped keep soldiers alive in highly dangerous situations we will demonstrate that in order to maintain the three rules of CQB operators must be experts in weapon Transitions and how to communicate within a team to maintain surprise and speed we will learn how suppressed weapons help to ensure the element of surprise I will show you how the assault rifle has evolved to become an essential tool in CQB and how the picatinny rail system allows attachments to make you a more efficient gunfighter we will visit an anti-terror academy and demonstrate how violence of action is used in the defense of a VIP vehicle Convoy finally Im going to demonstrate how fast roping onto a Target is used to maintain all three rules of CQB to better understand the nature of the three elements surprise speed and violence of action lets now have a closer look at each of them separately violence of action is just another way of saying act with overwhelming Force gaining and maintaining physical and psychological momentum is of utmost importance for any CQB team correctly applied violence of action will eliminate or neutralize the enemy while keeping friendly casualties at a minimum complete domination of the battlefield is the AIM surprise can be the best friend of a CQB team its achieved by acting in a way the enemy does not expect to gain surprise meaning to get as close to the enemy as possible without raising alarm or suspicion is achieved by moving in a clandestine manner either at night or with low noise or using concealment gaining and achieving the initiative is the AIM once the attack begins speed allows the CQB team to use the first few seconds gained by surprise to its own utmost advantage swath of land was turned into a muddy battle space where each Army fought against each other from sandbagged trench positions in World War II this completely changed as combat became inherently closer with infantry often utilizing the terrain camouflage and more urban house to house engagements Korea and especially Vietnam highlighted what we now know as special forces special forces are experts in non-traditional Warfare and can work in small groups Behind Enemy Lines they often specialize in unique methods of Battlefield insertion like parachuting and scuba diving and theyre comfortable with night operations intelligence gathering and specific Target missions in extremely dangerous areas in the 1970s AS Global terrorism began to be a challenge for the U.S and its allies these specialized soldiers also began to train in anti and counter-terrorism after the fall of the Soviet Union and the attacks on the World Trade Center the fight against Global terrorism became the main mission of most of International Special Forces and anti-terror police talk about the origins of Special Forces and at different branches is kind of a big subject but well start from World War II when World War II was over a lot of these organizations that got disbanded because at the time the thinking was we dont really need them now well that changed rather quickly once the Cold War set in there was a new world and a new problem to deal with and so we had to start thinking how can we do this the Navy frog men eventually the UDT teams underwater demolition teams eventually turned into the seals where they gained a lot of notoriety in the Vietnam War the oss the office of strategic Services which was really our spy unit for America was disbanded after World War II and kind of broke into two sections we got the American CIA Central Intelligence Agency and we also had the US Army Special Forces which is what I am a U.S army green beret now lets get down to business and dive into the specifics of CQB training and tactics one of the fundamental missions of any special forces operator is to assault a building or compound most often there are many teams involved in the assault but the essential rules of surprise speed and violence of action always apply when planning for assault theres two things you almost never have enough of time and information if were planning to take down a villa in Iraq almost all those buildings are surrounded by a very high wall so how are you going to get through you might want to use a charge to blow through that wall depends on how big the target is if its a very small Target hit it hard once in one spot and youre in if its a big Target a big complex were going to want to use what we call multiple breech points everybodys a breacher everybodys a shooter before any operator can begin training CQB he needs to master his weapons weapon transition is one of the fundamentals of CQB this is a term used to describe what happens when you have to move from your main weapon to your pistol as a result of malfunction or running out of ammo so let me talk you through whats going on during a transition youre using your main rifle as your weapon and youre clearing rooms and doing what you need to do in a CQB situation what were training for here is if you have a problem with the gun you run out of ammo or you actually have a malfunction if youre far away then you go ahead and clear that jam and deal with that gun since you need it to shoot far in this case in a CQB situation I dont have time to fix this right away so what I immediately do without taking my eye off the target this is key thats your threat you never want to lose sight of that I have a problem I use this hand to sweep I go to my pistol draw get a good grip rail out and engage that Target now when I have time in the luxury of it I can put this back and deal with this weapon this is the muscle memory part of it we train individual steps and then chain it together into a longer process this gets really fast when it gets really smooth foreign CQB or close quarter battle is the term used by Elite military and police for the techniques used in close battle situations from built up urban areas to more rural compounds military and police have developed Close Quarter battle training since the second world war but Im examining the modern CQB techniques with some real special forces operators three rules are always surprise speed and violence of action in order to maintain the first two rules the team needs to move and operate as one with all of the chaos of a CQB situation the team needs to be able to communicate silently and efficiently as they move toward their target these guys have been doing what we call a flow drill where they get into different positions in what we call a stack and move through a simulated Target were soon going to add live ammo and then maybe explosives and every time you take that up a notch the training becomes more realistic and definitely more interesting stop what you saw right there was a signal process that these guys have been practicing the lead man halted the formation as soon as he did that that gets passed back to the rear and the rear man he makes sure hes ready to go and he puts his hand on the shoulder of the guy in front of him and squeezes he does the same thing he feels The Squeeze he makes sure his gear squared away and hes ready to go passes it up to this guy and he finally passes it up to number one man hes gonna move him forward stop look at number one man hes scanning his front with his long gun number two is actually in support of him you notice hes right on his butt in general number three is the breacher he carries the explosive charge this big scary cat has this what we call the hooligan tools if the charge doesnt work it can rip down the door with this the last guy hes pulling rear security so these guys have a 360 degree protection of guns going everywhere go look at a progressively clear one two three four now theyre in in this case now theyve locked down the room and theyre just moving forward in two-man teams thats pretty darn good good stack good security good 360 degree security up to the objective good job guys now lets take a look at the U.S militarys main assault rifle the M4 starting out as the M16 rifle the U.S military commissioned cult to create a durable rifle system for various military forces the Contemporary version of this rifle is the M4 and many weapons manufacturers use the same basic weapon frame to create the modern assault rifles we use today and this is the hnk 416 first off check out the rail system here its called the picatinny rail it enables you to mount various Optics lasers whatever you need tack lights on right or left side and on top again shoot a preference Mission preference this ones fitted with the m203 grenade launcher theres a 40 millimeter grenade you open it up put the grade in lock it and shoot it down range its also fitted here with an EOTech holographic site when you look through this youll see a circle of red light with a dot inside and you can zero this gun to whatever distance you want wherever that point of aim is thats where the point of impact for the bullet is heres a laser its got various settings some of them are visible some of them are invisible IE infrared when were using night vision goggles we could turn this on unless you have night vision goggles you cant see the laser but I can see it you can also Mark targets so an aircraft going above you knows exactly where to go because at night in the chaos of battle you got to know what youre shooting at Optics are great but they break batteries run out things happen you need to be able to use these weapons with the iron sights as a last-ditch effort or in a pinch you gotta learn what the basics before you can put the advanced stuff on I am somewhere in the Czech Republic At The Uber not training compound were in our stands this is the rapid response National police force of the Czech Republic a really Elite unit these guys not only respond to terrorist threats but perform a wide range of missions to include protecting VIPs and diplomats obviously to do that they have a very high level of CQB have one of their firearms instructors so hes going to take me through some of the weapons these guys use starting with their Close Quarter stuff for pistols so tell me about this one this is block 26. it fits into this Drop Like holster but this is the kind of gun that these guys would keep probably concealed close by and get right to it nice something a little more interesting really pretty light yeah okay Ive seen it up I think its time for shoot the Glock 9 millimeter has become a preferred weapon of international Special Forces and police because of its simple square body and durable frame it makes for an ideal CQB weapon and CQB fitting the Glock with a sound suppressor helps to maintain the element of surprise when eliminating threats Close Quarter battle also known as CQB are the techniques used by police and military for working inside buildings and compounds as they move to gain dynamic entry and clear hallways and rooms lets go inside the head of a member of this Elite Delta Force team as they assault a prison Rescue an operative and get X filled by a helicopter from a roof this allows us to again look at the three main principles of CQB and how theyre applied during the specific stages of an assault arrive undetected and prepare to enter on a single command surprise enter quickly speed dominate the space violence of action move tactically and silently while securing the corridors to the room to be cleared surprise eliminate all enemy within the room by the use of fast accurate and discriminating fires violence of action positions that allow complete control of the rooms foreign during an operation it is of utmost importance to maintain security at all times and to be prepared to react to more enemy contact at any moment therefore rear security can never be neglected uh vehicle Convoy protection is an essential part of CQB training today Im training in an anti-terror center learning how to maintain surprise speed and violence of action so what were doing here is simulating a VIP Convoy that gets ambushed by an IED and several Shooters now for something like this to really succeed and for the guy to survive its got to be extremely fast and very aggressive when the enemy hits you you better hit back twice as hard foreign first one that was a really good run now even though those guys were initially not on the offensive or actually ambushed they used all three cqp principles to get themselves out of that jam surprise because they initially attacked the enemy right back in their face speed because they did it quickly and rapidly and violence of action they overwhelmingly shot down there dropped whoever was attacking them got out of the area thats how you win a fight thats how you survive for a more intimate view of being attacked in a convoy this time Im gonna play the VIP and get right in on the action with VIP and vehicle protection there are several parts to the process first off the team needs to form a strong line of aggressive fire in order to protect the VIP exiting the VIP from the vehicle is part one and once the second vehicle is ready he can be placed into it securely the process of being protected is ironically extremely physically rough and I can tell you that having a 200 pound man push you around and hold you down in the back seat of a car does not make you feel so safe but as with many CQB tactics its about keeping people alive Close Quarter battle or CQB are the techniques used by International police and military when they are engaging an armed enemy in a building or small battle space we are exploring the techniques and weapons used to be an expert in CQB assault teams will often use a technique known as fast roping this technique uses a low hovering helicopter over the desired Target area then a heavy rope is deployed down to the roof of the target building using thick gloves The Operators slide down in seconds onto the objective ready to engage Im here with Orna the check National police force and today theyre training in air operations CQB demands that you be ready to get into a Target any way you can surprise speed violence of action sometimes that means straight from the top today I am coming along in this training exercise to practice up on my CQB fast roping all right foreign was developed as a quicker method to get operators into the battle as rapidly as possible with all of their gear with heavy gloves the operator grabs onto the thick rope and uses his hands and legs as a basic braking system this allows for extremely quick descent down the road onto the target trained well an assault team of operators can fast rope into a CQB scenario fully equipped in a matter of seconds in this episode we learned some of the basic weapon and team techniques that form the training behind Close Quarter battle as we revisit our three basic CQB scenes we can now better appreciate how important these CQB techniques are for staying alive in the face of death dominating the space gaining 360 degree security moving tactically and smoothly all contribute to a successful operation foreign speed doesnt necessarily mean fast but rather to move in a careful smooth and direct manner resulting in smart and quick movements moving immediately to positions that allow complete control of the space weapon awareness and eliminating all Enemy by the use of fast accurate and discriminating fires also contribute to success foreign gaining and maintaining immediate control of the situation and all Personnel while being prepared to react to more enemy contact at any moment further ensures a successful operation to sum up its important to understand that each of the main elements of CQB is connected to one another violence of action coupled with speed increases surprise in turn successful surprise allows increased speed in todays episode of CQB we looked at the founding of U.S Special Forces and the use of Close Quarter battle techniques in the military and police we examine the basics of CQB from weapon awareness and team signaling all the way to weapon transition and helicopter insertion we learned three rules of CQB surprise speed and violence of action are critical to obtaining a victory and keeping your team and yourself alive my name Quarter battle situation is getting accurate information about your target we will also take a look at the concept of breaching through dynamic entry this is the term that military and police use to describe entering a building or room using shotguns and explosive shape charges to blow down a barricaded door or wall to gain elements of surprise speed and violence of action I will give you an historical overview of the formation of police rapid response units and their use of military Concepts and tactics we will see inside the head of a rapid response unit team member and feel how maintaining surprise speed and violence of action post quarter battle through weapons awareness Field of Fire and coordinated team communication and movement is the key to a successful CQB operation finally I will be on a live fire demonstration whats called a kill house with a police rapid response unit as we move through working room by room to overwhelm the space and take out any threats the formation of a SWAT team in LA county really marked the development of tactical response units all across the United States SWAT in La really kind of took a blending of military Concepts and law enforcement Concepts and made them very effective for where they are La is a dangerous place something I admire about those guys is that not only do they have to get in the Target and successfully take care of business there theyre surrounded by a civilian population not all of them friendly but definitely all of them cannot be hurt so theyre able to surgically complete a mission as difficult at best and dangerous at worst the history of Elite Police Close Quarter battle techniques starts by looking at how police face challenges like riots and civil unrest and then began adopting military-style tactics and weapons in the 1970s Elite military units influenced police units in Northern California which resulted in L.A County forming the first SWAT teams as international criminal organizations and terrorists became more sophisticated police organizations all over the world had to adopt more of these military Close Quarter battle techniques foreign things a SWAT team absolutely has to do is get dynamic entry whether its a shotgun blast a charge or a battering ram vitally important that those guys get inside quickly and aggressively so whether its a military unit or some police force around the United States surprise speed and violence of action principles of CQB that will win the day for them when preparing to enter a suspected drug dealers apartment there are various methods of entry available to them the three primary methods of dynamic breaching are one shotgun using specialized shotgun rounds to attack either the lock or the hinges using carefully placed and measured explosives to defeat the lock hinges or even cave in the door itself and three The Swinging a battering ram to hit near the lock assembly of the door shattering the lock and pushing the door open it was 9 11 that really highlighted just how vulnerable we are even the smallest police department has its own tactical response unit as well as our National Assets all of them have to be able to deal with chemical attacks biological attacks nuclear attacks and of course shootings and explosives all of these assets from local all the way to National are in communication and mutually benefit from training but all of them have one thing in common every one of them in order to be effective and protect the population has to be good at CQB thank you now lets take a look at information in intelligence gathering and their different means first and foremost is human-based Intel Gathering where operatives or officers are undercover in civilian clothes observing the target area or personality and Reporting back to command another form of surveillance in modern Close Quarter battle is technically assisted where unmanned aerial Vehicles close circuit cameras GPS tracking and audio bugging equipment is utilized to design a clear plan of assault on the CQB Target yeah because of the nature of of where we are and who were talking to I cant tell you his name and I cant let you get a look at him but Im really excited because Im gonna get a tour inside one of their tactical surveillance bands give me a little tour about what you guys have here and the capabilities of this so just now we are in the mobile communication and the observations book s operations we are able to communicate on the different levels additional radios for negotiation and Cyprus other police branches now how many guys normally would you have in this van for for an operation operations I think also people think that surveillance is this kind of cool glamorous job its a lot of hard work isnt it yeah so sometimes training quote recall you have to eat you have to go to the bathroom actually let me see this man awesome [Applause] today we are looking at police rapid response tactics for Close Quarter battle and how surveillance weapons training and gaining dynamic entry all allow control of surprise speed and violence of action a kill house is a live fire training area used by police and military to do whats called flow drills the area is usually built out of tires or rubber padded walls that ensure stray bullets do not Ricochet back into the officers as they move to clear rooms and practice CQB CQB is extremely dangerous and its actually pretty dangerous to train if you want to train it to a high level what were doing today is working as a team in what we call Flow drills going through the Target and taking it down but without ammo or explosives you yet the idea behind a kill house came from the military and police understanding that in real world hostage or building assault situations there is a need for operators to feel comfortable in Close Quarter battles with weapons firing and explosives detonating right next to them and all around them so that was great watching those guys flow very deliberate flow something I dont usually see in my line of work in the military is they had a guy with a big heavy Shield up front the whole time it makes a lot of sense if you can have that and you know youve got bad guys in here that are going to try to kill you a lot of its the same kind of stuff same principles one two aggressively move forward they have to hold on a door they used flash bangs when they lost their momentum its going to be great okay so Im in an undisclosed location in the Czech Republic at the urana training compound or not stands for utvar for this is the national police force of the Czech government this is pretty much the most elite unit for dealing with terrorist activity and pretty much a lot of other missions Im with one of their best weapons instructors youve got a few of them here so whats this first one this is MP5K version this is a this is a shorter Barrel HK mp5s we know some people dont know it shoots nine millimeter and uh yeah this is this is a shorter Barrel so is the accuracy going to go down on this a little bit not so much probably so this is perfect for close inward and Im a lefty so I get to eat all the gas that comes flying out here which is pretty pretty cool this has got a selector switch for single three round bursts and full auto so you have a lot of different options and we have no Optics on this but these are very easy to control I havent shot an MP5 in a long time quite some time but I know that theyre pretty easy to control pull them in nine millimeter boom all right so of course the minute anybody like me gets and gets in the same room with a piece of Kit weve got to try it on see if we like it so feels right thats about the right heft its got the protective plates and the soft armor lots of velcro to get in and out quickly this is a very familiar feeling getting hit it up locking it down and Im ready to go theres a few things you can see here immediately this is a right-handed shooter this holster is here for quick access he can draw it and shoot Im left-handed mine would be over here hes got his radio hes got various magazine pouches youll see here a metal cable very important because this is actually a breakaway piece of body armor if I need to get out of this quickly for example my vehicle gets pushed in the water and Im drowning I need to get out of this quickly I can pull a handle and it breaks away also in the event that Im wounded like comrades can get to me a lot quicker key thing about any kind of Kit The Operators got to know where everything is instinctively so before you take this into combat you need to train with it over and over and over again in todays episode we are looking at police rapid response unit Close Quarter Battle Tactics and how surprised speed and violence of action are maintained by strict weapon control team movement and dynamic entry jumping into the head of a rapid response unit member while training in a kill house gives you an idea of how operators do flow drills and gain awareness of their team movement and weapon control assault teams will train in the kill house over and over to ensure that all these elements are under their control in a real world scenario and they operate with confidence and keep themselves and their teammates alive when a team moves toward a Target they must commit to all the three principles of Close Quarter battle by moving with stealth through various cover and hidden positions they maintain the element of surprise with a constant Pace in formation they maintain the element of speed and finally with a sudden coordinated attack they commit to the violence of action required to dominate The Assault with helmet and gun cameras attached to this rapid response team we get to feel how it feels to be making fraction of second decisions to keep you your team and any civilians in the area alive when moving toward a Target team members hold their weapons with a muzzle pointed in the direction of travel and slightly down to allow for unobstructed vision also the muzzle is always oriented to where the soldier is looking actions outside the point of entry must be quick and well rehearsed because the doorway or breach point is always a dangerous position [Applause] [Applause] foreign doing some test shooting and getting the low down on this anti-terror units use of the MP5 then were gonna shoot it this is my personal MP5 pain A5 type yeah is this your weapon this is yours all right thank you thank you for bringing it out for show and tell man um and the laser and the light thats it look you feel weak nice yeah yeah thats nice thats thats good come in boom yeah dead on yeah plus uh the MP5 are all a chamber for nine millimeters so its um its a very easy round to control and also for you guys its not so much penetration what is perfect in the cities when we are taking somebody on streets we have to control another people well you guys have to you know you guys are always you know as police officers you guys are always worried about civilians in and around the area and if you dont want a bullet whipping through something yeah I get it all right so now weve got weve got our shotgun yeah you guys use that to breach doors um okay but also that could also go to like a semi mode too right yeah so you can switch it to do something more and then it will cycle for you right got it yeah when youre doing when youre doing breaching you want to have it on manual always so I think its time to shoot them [Applause] today were training some of the basic police CQB tactics from kill house live fire drills weapons training and dynamic entry so Ive had a chance to watch these guys flow and its pretty much the same way we do things too the principles are awfully close so Im gonna plug myself into the stack in this case Im going to start in the back but once we get in there and start moving through and problems present and we go in different directions itll change this is going to be a lot of fun my job now is to cover rear security until we get in oh breaching techniques vary widely based on the type of construction encountered and the types of explosives available to the breaching Force what we see here is a shape charge which is basically four pieces of wood connected with explosives on the side facing the door then a long detonation cord is attached so that the team can be a safe distance away from the explosion two three once inside the kill house all my super B training comes back to me and I fall into my position in the stack starting out as the last man Im responsible for rear security but as we move through my position changes and I have to commit to room clearing and door security with the rest of the guys as rooms get cleared and flashbangs fly everyone has to maintain as much Silent Communication as possible all right guys whos by who finally the entire kill house is quiet as all of us start to replay how the assault unfolded and how accurate our shots were in this episode we were looking at police rapid response tactics as we revisit our real world scenarios we can now better appreciate how important gaining dynamic entry strict weapon control and team movement are to the three main rules of CQB surprise speed and violence of action the entire team enters the room quickly and smoothly and clears the doorway immediately because the door is always the focal point for anyone inside the room focusing attention here is crucial for successful CQB operation foreign [Applause] [Applause] in the case of countering terrorist attacks all rapid response team members must move as one unit and know exactly what their responsibility within their team is repeated and realistic training enables teams to move forward with speed and with primary concern for the safety of their team members and any potential civilian casualties or hostages once the target has been located bystander civilians are separated from the hostages and targets all right the actual event of violence of action can be over in a matter of seconds in todays episode we learned about the creation of rapid response in urban police units and how they need to be experts in military style Close Quarter battle and weaponry we also learned how training with submachine guns and real explosives inside a live fire kill house allows rapid response teams to stay in control of all three principles of CQB surprise speed and violence of action foreign Special Operations are special divisions of military, police, or intelligence services that are highly qualified in specific areas of urban warfare and in a variety of special weapons and technology.
